Sandy with Little orphan Annie as they appear in the comic strip
Sandy first appeared in January 1925 as a small puppy whom Annie rescued from a group of boys behind Mrs. Bottle's store. Annie named her Sandy. Sandy was entrusted to the care of Paddy Lynch as the Bottles did not allow Annie to keep the dog, but was reunited with her owner when Annie was kidnapped by a group of Gypsies. A fully grown Sandy came to Annie's rescue, and the two have been together since.

Broadway musical universe[]
It is established in the book Sandy's Story that he used to belong to an Irish immigrant family under the name "Sammy", whom they named after Uncle Sam, in reference to the new country and life they came to live in. But when the Depression hit in the late 1920s, Kathleen, his former owner, along with her family, the Moores, was forced to abandon Sammy when they had to move to California in search of better financial opportunities. Sammy was then left at the mercy of the streets of New York, having to learn how to fend for himself and scrounge for whatever food was available, all while evading dog catchers and police officers looking for stray animals.
However, when Annie found him being tortured by preteen boys, she defended Sandy and ordered the boys to leave the dog alone. After the preteens ran off, Annie befriended the dog and convinced an officer that Sandy was her dog. Ever since, Sandy is Annie's loyal canine companion that never leaves her.
2014 Movie[]
In the 2014 Movie, Sandy is gifted to Annie by Mr Stacks. They play in the garden together a lot and Sandy sleeps on Annie's bed at night.
