Punjab in the 1982 film

Punjab is a supporting character in the 1982 film "Annie" and its 1995 sequel Annie: A Royal Adventure!. Originally, he was from the comic strip "Little Orphan Annie", but he never appeared in the musical or its 1999 adaption. He and the Asp are Oliver Warbucks' bodyguards. Punjab is played by Geoffrey Holder in the 1982 film, and Antony Zaki in its sequel.

Information[]

Mystically stoic and at once intimidating and gentle, Punjab is of quasi-Indian origins but eludes being nailed down to any one real-world caste or affiliation. Punjab sports white Hindu-style formal attire with turban and a red-and-orange-striped cummerbund. He is skilled at such feats as telekinesis, and when Annie and Sandy arrive he stills a barking Sandy by waving his hands.

When Annie is kidnapped by Rooster, Lilly, and Agatha, Punjab takes to the skies in Oliver's personal auto-copter to search the town for the period car. Punjab spots Annie and Rooster hanging from the top of a raised B&O railroad drawbridge, removes his turban, and ties it to the railings of the auto-copter and lowers himself to rescue Annie. Having hold of Annie, Punjab kicks Rooster causing him to slide down the opened drawbridge, and the pair are also lowered safely to the ground. Punjab hands Annie to Oliver and earns a hug from Grace.

At the end of the film Punjab, in somewhat of a plot twist, appears to be developing feelings for Miss Hannigan when he takes her hand while she is riding an elephant during Oliver's party.

Trivia[]

  • Punjab is both a skilled bodyguard and a healer, and during a radio broadcast he puts the same radio worker to sleep twice with a simple tap to protect Annie and Oliver from the worker's inexplicable physical approaches.
  • Punjab speaks in a southern Indian accent in the 1982 film, while in the 1995 sequel he speaks in a British accent. (Different actors.)
  • The amazing 1992 actor, Geoffrey Holder, passed away in 2014.
  • Punjab is so nicknamed because he is from the Punjab state of India (and it's undoubtedly easier to pronounce than his real name).
